Visit Museum Island
Berlin's world-famous Museumsinsel (Museum Island) is wedged between the river Spree and Kupfergraben. The buildings on the island accommodate the archaeological collections and the art of the 19th century. The Altes Museum (Old Museum), built in 1830 after the design by Karl Friedrich Schinkel, was the first building on the Museum Island and the first public museum in the Prussian state. It was followed by the Neues Museum (New Museum), the Alte Nationalgalerie (Old National Gallery), the Bode Museum and the Pergamon Museum. In 1999 the Museum Island was added to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage list. During the Second World War, up to seventy percent of the museum buildings were destroyed. The restoration of the buildings as well as the return, reunification and reorganization of the collections is part of the “Masterplan Museum Island”. Visit the New Museum which reopened in October 2009. The impressively restored building houses; and among other exhibits of the ancient history collection is the famous bust of the Egyptian queen Nefertiti. Alternatively, visit the Pergamon Museum, which accommodates three separate museums. The monumental reconstruction of archaeological building ensembles - such as the Pergamon Altar, the Market Gate of Miletus and the Ishtar Gate - has made the Pergamon world-famous. Alternatively a second museum could be visited. Please be informed that the Pergamon Museum Altar is closed from 2014 due for the next three years due to renovations
